The National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) was established in 2001 by the Department for Health to provide infrastructure to support cancer clinical trials and other well designed studies and improve the speed, quality and integration of cancer research, thus improving the quality of care.  The NCRN is now under the umbrella of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) aimed at ensuring this approach to research covers all parts of the NHS.

Essex Cancer Research Network (ECRN) was established in October 2009 following the merger of South Essex and Mid Anglia Cancer Research Networks, originally established in 2001.  It covers a population of 1.3 million and is now working to align with the Eastern Strategic Clinical Network.

Structure and Activity

The core team consists of the Clinical Lead (CL), Dr Krishnaswamy Madhavan, the Research Network Manager (RNM), Dawn Beaumont-Jewell and the Research Liaison Facilitator, Thomas Jenkins. The core team is also thankful to be supported by the ECRN's previous Network Manager, Mrs Ashley Solieri, for 1 day each week. The ECRN operates a devolved model of working with Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Basildon & Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust and Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust being responsible for employing and managing teams to support recruitment to cancer studies in their organisations.  There are 12.23wte research nurses and administrative and other support staff funded by the ECRN.  Previously the Essex Cancer Research Network Board had the responsibility of strategic direction and decision making and it’s membership comprised of the CL and RNM, ECN Medical Director, Network Director, Nurse Director and Lead Pharmacist, CLRN Senor Manager, clinical research leads, cancer research team managers and Trust R&D representatives from each Trust and two patient & carer representatives. We are currently engaging with the new SCN to develop the same level of interaction into the transition.

Integration with other research infrastructure

The ECRN collaborates with the Essex and Hertfordshire Comprehensive Local Research Network (E&H CLRN), one of 25 CLRNs covering England.  E&H CLRN coordinates and facilitates the conduct of clinical research and provide a wide range of support to the local research community including advice and support regarding Research Management and Governance (RM&G).
