Awareness & Early Diagnosis

The National Awareness & Early Diagnosis initiative is a partnership between Department of Health (DH), National Cancer Action Team (NCAT) and Cancer Research UK.  This work stream was announced in the Cancer Reform Strategy, 2007 with the aim to raise public awareness of signs and symptoms of cancer to encourage earlier presentation to Primary Care, thus improving outcomes.

There are four main work streams of NAEDI as follows:

1)   Achieving early presentation by public and patients
2)   Optimising clinical practice and systems
3)   Improving GP access to diagnostics
4)   Research , evaluation and monitoring

Further information on NAEDI and its work streams can be found on Cancer Research UK website.

Within Essex Cancer Network, our work has focussed on two key themes:

National Bowel Cancer Campaign

The first National Bowel Cancer Campaign was launched in January 2012 for nine weeks to raise awareness of bowel cancer systems.  The campaign targets people aged 55 years and over from lower social economic groups.  The campaign, using the "Be Clear on Cancer" follows the success of the regional pilots in early 2011.
